How to Create Momentum?
Of late, I found myself avoiding challenges and changes. The more I ignored those things, the more they seemed to take over my heart and mind. Creating momentum in life and business requires vigilance. The discipline required to move through my procrastination is easier than the suffering I go through by putting things off. This week, I encourage all of you to do the thing you least want to deal with. It could be a tough phone call, a report that is due (taxes) or just dealing with an inevitable task. Our mind cannot be fooled by avoiding things. To …
The Patient Leader
Projects almost never go the way I suspect that they will. They seem to take longer or have more obstacles than I can plan for. As some of you know, I have created a project called The Aconcagua Man Project. This project has required great patience from me. The preparation, planning, time, resources, obstacles, and disappointments have tempered me to my core. This 9 month leadership project is a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual kick ass journey that culminates in our summiting the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia. The Mighty Mountain of Aconcagua will require me taking …
The Purposeful Leader
We have gotten lazy in the name of introspection. Yes, I feel that introspection and “knowing” thyself is of incredible value in terms of life and leadership. Yet, I find that many of us are using “process” as a way to rationalize our non-action. Why? Because it’s easier for me to sit on my duff in the name of process rather than to take an action that actually accomplishes something. Being in One’s process is overrated. After awhile it’s like a stinky shoe. The smell won’t go away, unless I do something to make it smell better. As a professional …
Stepping Up To Leadership
Special Note: Stephen has created a new blog that chronicles a nine month journey of seven amazing men standing firmly in their integrity. Please take a moment to check it out. Go to www.theaconcaguaproject.com Just keep stepping. That is the council I give myself when things get tough. All I have to do is take the next step. I can even pause if I want to. I may not stop for long, because there is a momentum to taking action. It’s like dancing or hiking or driving a business project forward. I must keep moving. I heard that about Sharks …
The Creativity of Leadership
“I can’t do it.”…”I don’t have a job.”…”It’s too hard.” As a Leadership Coach I hear those things every day. I say them sometimes too. It’s not true. Not one word of it. It only seems true because that kind of thinking seeks evidence to be “right.” Can you hear that? It’s a trajectory. It’s like a missile headed for hell. I understand it, because I have compassion and I just don’t believe it. I suppose that’s why having a coach is so powerful. A great coach will mirror back to you, where you are limiting your Self. I see …
The Swinging Leader
You must swing to lead. I was sitting at a baseball game last week and something became intuitively obvious. Sitting back and playing it safe is for sissies! I think that’s especially true in a tough economy. The more constricted a leader, the further constrained his/her business. Why do you suppose that is? Because when the game is on the line, we all want to see a Babe Ruth step to the plate, because in our hearts we know there is a chance for victory. It’s important to note that Babe Ruth struck out many more times than he slammed …
Proclaiming Life Leadership
It was a public declaration of life. There were a thousand of us that put our bodies into the ice cold water of the Boulder Reservoir on New Years Day. While we all did the same thing, which to most seems crazy; everyone did it with there own personal style. It was like being stuck with pins and needles as I swam/ran my way to the ice edge of the lake. Actually, it hurt like hell; until the exhilaration overtook the physical pain. It was exhilarating, life affirming as my friend Steve Ruskaup called it. That’s why we did it, …
Great Things Come Out of Doing Nothing
I just sat there with a blank look on my face. “What are you doing?” my friend asked. “I am doing nothing” I replied. I like doing nothing at times…especially when there is something big at stake. The strategy of doing nothing is a rarity these days. It’s a moment of stillness, silence and surrender. For me, it means I don’t know what to do. I have learned it is ok to not know what to do. When I do nothing I am doing everything. If I do nothing for long enough and get really quiet I can experience a …
How to fix a broken wheel?
One of my favorite songs is on the radio. My voice rings out with creativity and resonance, all the time thinking I sound better than I actually do. I don’t care. Do you know why? It’s because my creative mind is engaged. Life is good and the sun is shining. As I arrive home I’m feeling peace and calm for the evening ahead. Getting home is always a good thing. Pulling into my driveway the garage door opens on command. As the door ascends, I see something looming in front of me; like it has for so many months before. …
Starting Something New
How do you begin again? Why would you want to? Sometimes our failed attempts at success stop us dead in our tracks. Have you ever really botched something up? I mean so badly that your heart feels like a lead balloon? It happens to the best of us. It can happen to you, me, your neighbor, and your minister… even to our amazing parents who, as children, we believed were infallible. First, let’s start with a dose of reality. If you are living life on this planet, guess what? You make mistakes! Sorry to burst your bubble. Nobody is exempt. …
